WORK HISTORY

Tommy is a Toronto-based People Leader in Tech & Entrepreneur. He is currently working on scaling AfterShip as the organization’s People lead for the North American & European regions. His area of expertise is in GTM Recruitment, Early stage HR set-up, scaling teams and People Operations/Culture building. Tommy has successfully scaled 3 tech businesses from the ground up as their sole recruiting lead in Canada.

His additional strengths and key of interests: Business Development, Brand Marketing, Product Sales and Event Planning.

Head of People - AfterShip

I am currently the Head of People at AfterShip, handling Talent Acquisition, People Operations and HR for our North American / European expansions. I am responsible for all business people efforts with the goal of bringing on high-quality teammates to help support and grow our mission.

I am a non-technical professional by nature helping other non-technical candidates grow and develop their careers in the eCommerce tech space.


AfterShip (Last updated: 01-10-2024)

  • Employee #1 at Aftership for the North American team (came in with 0 and tasked to get us to 1)

  • Grew the NA / EU region from 0 to 25 headcount in 2021. Finished off 2023 with 60 headcount.

  • Global headcount grew from 100 to 450 from 2021 to 2025.

  • Leading the Talent acquisition, Human resources, People operations and Culture building strategies

  • Hired various leadership roles (filled in-house + partner with executive search firms for CXO).

  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding, and offboarding all employees and contractors in NA/EU regions.

  • Managed recruitment agencies, PEO/GEO Account manager relationships and champion for all relevant HR SaaS tools.

  • Set up USA & Canadian entities for the org.

    • Successfully transitioned away from PEO model for Canada to go fully in-house

  • HR, Talent, People Operations teams report directly to me

    • Dotted line: North American Finance team

  • Finance/planning related responsibilities include:

    • Annual headcount and budget planning

    • annual recurring merit cycles, end of year bonuses, promotions, off-cycle merits, etc.

    • semi-monthly payroll cycle management for the organization. Responsible for payroll for Canada, USA and Europe.

    • Regional salary banding projects and adjustments

  • Joined the Team pre-series B ($66 million USD) and set up multiple tools, platforms, and, processes

    • ATS (Greenhouse), USA PEO (Trinet), Canada GEO (Globalization Partners, and Deel), Background check (HireRight/CERTN), EU GEO (Safeguard / Deel), contract e-signing (Docusign), LinkedIn Recruiter Corporate, LinkedIn Talent Insights, Internal Careers page (careers.aftership.com) and more.

    • Some processes that I have created: Regionalized salary bands, performance KPI templates (probation and PIP), Relocation and sign-on bonus policies, referral programs, hiring templates, hiring guides, job description templates, LinkedIn recruiting outreach templates, career development plans, and more.


Business Recruiter - Square ( Feb 2020 - April 2021)

  • First and only Canadian Business Recruiter at Square.

  • Assisted in scaling the Toronto office headcount from 28 to 197 in first 12 months.

  • Hired for roles in Canada, USA, UK, and Ireland.

  • Specialized in all positions that fell into business recruiting. Directly filled positions for GTM functions (Customer Success, Account Management, Sales), marketing, project management, technical writing, business analystics, International relations, risk, and more.

  • Personally recruited the entire Canadian Account Management team from 1 to 27 all within 2 quarters during COVID. (Hired the East Coast lead, 2 managers + 3 cohorts of Individual contributors). Successfully built out the team in full autonomy, 100% contract acceptance rate and 100% satisfaction rate on candidate' recruiting experience.

  • Doubled the Canadian sales team in 2020 and hired the Head of Sales, Canada.

  • Co-Chair of the Asian & Pacific Islander Squares community for Canada

Business Recruiter - TourRadar ( July 2019 - Feb 2020)

  • TourRadar’s only North American Recruiter responsible for full cycle recruitment to fill hiring needs in the Toronto, Vienna, and New York offices

  • Managing internal candidates via ATS (Lever) and outsourcing external candidates via various methods (LinkedIn Premium, etc)

  • Campus Recruitment and Event Initiatives

  • Handling executive level Hiring (filling roles such as CMO, VPPM, and VP of Marketing)

  • Responsible for employer branding, and company culture tasks for the Toronto office. 2 person HR team for an office of 60+ employees.

  • Assist the partnership team with market research, brand strategy and cross brand marketing


Talent Acquisition - Localcoin (Sept 2017 - July 2019)

  • First and only recruiter throughout duration at Localcoin. Team's 4th employee who assisted in scaling headcount from 4 to 25. Hired quality candidates to help grow the company from a start-up of 14 ATMs to becoming Canada's largest BATM provider (950+ ATMs globally now).

  • Full life-cycle recruiting, including job postings, candidate sourcing, interview efforts, and on-boarding

  • Managing internal and external candidates via job boards, external recruitment agencies and applicant tracking system
